Shortly after the 1979 overthrow of the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Hadi Nejad-Hosseinian served Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini by taking control of the Mostazafan Foundation of New York, later to be re-named the Alavi Foundation, a pseudo-charitable organization that funds pro-Iranian, anti-American institutions within the United States. Later, Nejad-Hosseinian was to become Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Envoy to the United Nations. He held this UN position up until July of 2002, when he was replaced.
