* In the 1980s, Landau wrote numerous essays denouncing the Reagan administration for trying to depose the Marxist-Leninist Sandinista government in Nicaragua. He characterized the Sandinistas as radical nationalists who sought only to gain independence from the grip of American imperialism, and to establish a free and democratic society devoted to the welfare of the poor.
