Additional Information on Huma Abedin

Overview

* In June 2012, five Republican lawmakers (most prominently, Michele Bachmann) sent letters to the inspectors general at the Departments of Homeland Security, Justice, and State, asking that they investigate whether the Muslim Brotherhood was gaining undue influence over U.S. government officials. One letter, noting that Huma Abedin’s position with Hillary Clinton “affords her routine access to the secretary [of state] and to policymaking,” expressed concern over the fact that Abedin “has three family members—her late father, mother and her brother—connected to Muslim Brotherhood operatives and/or organizations.” Some other prominent Republicans such as John McCain and John Boehner disavowed the concerns articulated in the letters.

* As of 2017, Huma Abedin’s net worth was estimated to be approximately $2 million.

* In January 2018, Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner ended their pending divorce case, citing, in identical statements from their respective lawyers, their mutual desire to protect their 6-year-old son by settling the case outside of the courtroom. Family law expert and prominent divorce attorney Michael Stutman, who was not involved in the case, speculated that the couple may have decided to stay married in order to invoke spousal immunity in case the Justice Department decided to launch an investigation of Abedin for having kept classified emails on Weiner’s laptop during her tenure as Hillary Clinton’s deputy chief of staff. (Under New York law, a husband or wife cannot be “required to disclose a confidential communication made by one or the other during the marriage.”) In a similar vein, matrimonial lawyer Suzanne Bracker told the New York Post: “He [Weiner] easily could be called in by a grand jury to testify against her, so by dropping the lawsuit he can exercise the marital privilege. When you’re married to someone you cannot be compelled to testify against them.” A third attorney, Bonnie Rabin, said that the “spousal privilege issue is out there considering the investigations.”
